29 Apr '08 - + 0 - 0 Google betrokken bij conflict Iran door gebruik "Arabische Golf" ipv "Perzische Golf" in Google Earth

Google heeft indirect positie genomen in het conflict tussen de VS en Iran door de Perzische Golf de "Arabische Golf" te noemen in Google Earth. Er zijn inmiddels diverse acties tegen Google genomen waaronder een Iraanse petitie die online inmiddels meer dan 600.000 handtekeningen heeft opgeleverd.

De naam "Perzische Golf" wordt door de opstellers van de petitie door de VN ook gebruikt:

"The historical and geographical name of the Persian Gulf has been endorsed and clarified by the United Nations on many occasions and is in use by the UN, its member states, and all other international agencies worldwide. The last UN Directive confirming the name of the Persian Gulf was (reference ST/CS/SER.A/29/Add.2) on August, 18th 1994."

Daarnaast wordt de term ook door Wikipedia officieel gebruikt. Ook Wikipedia geeft aan dat er conflicten rond de naamgeving zijn:

"Since the 1960s with the rise of Arab nationalism (Pan-Arabism), starting with Gamal Abdel Nasser's Arab Republic of Egypt, some Arab countries, including the ones bordering the Persian Gulf, have adopted the term "Arabian Gulf" (in Arabic: الخلیج العربي al-khalīj al-ʿarabī to refer to the waterway.[6] This is controversial and not commonly used outside of the Arab world, nor is it recognized by the United Nations[7][8][9] and other international organizations."

Het artikel is inmiddels beveiligd tegen editing aangezien teveel mensen het wilde aanpassen.

Iran heeft afgelopen maandag ook officieel bezwaar gemaakt en de naamgeving veroordeeld: "The Islamic Iran Participation Party also condemned the move, saying it will raise suspicion that Google Earth managers and experts are “knowingly or unknowingly” following certain power’s efforts to provoke conflict in the Persian Gulf region." aldus de minister van Buitenlandse zaken Mohammad-Ali Hosseini in de altijd objectieve Tehran Times.

Google is niet de eerste die de fout maakt. Zo zou de National Geographic Society in 2004 ook de naam Arabian Gulf terug aangepast hebben na Iraans protest.

De vraag blijft echter waarom Google een controversiële naam verkiest boven een algemeen erkende en door VN en Wikipedia ondersteunde naam. Zou de Amerikaanse overheid hier enige invloed in hebben? U mag het zeggen...

Het vreemd om te zien dat eeuwen oude documentatie over de “Perzische golf” zomaar over het hoofd gezien wordt. Het is en het zal “Perzische golf” blijven.

Arbitrarily designating the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf is an irresponsible violation of all historical and International standards and would undermine the integrity of Google Earth.
